I tried to see if anyone else had posted this yet and I haven't seen anyone do it, so I thought I might as well. Forbidden Planet have just started discussing new press released by the BBC for the last two episodes. Details can be found HERE. There are SPOILERS for the last two specials in the post and possibly in the comments. Come, discuss with me!

An apology
by It's pronounced 'drawer' ([info]derooftrouser)
at November 23rd, 2009 (07:49 am)

I would like to express my sincere regret for my previous post.

When I posted something by the out-going showrunner, now essentially talking as a fan, stating that my, and possibly your, favourite television show would run forever, I did genuinely think that it would be a good thing.

In retrospect, I now see that I must have subconsciously wanted everybody to post cross-sectional slides of their own ossified canon, get wound up on the off-chance that something that may happen in a decade might contradict that, and criticise one writer for not being overly concerned by a plot point invented by another writer who was never overly-concerned with pre-existing plot points.

The whole 'Doctor Who fans' thing really should have tipped me off, frankly.

To conclude - I'll be watching the Fourteenth Doctor. And all the ones after him/her/it. Why not join me? They'll be great.

WoM annoyance
by darknote ([info]darknote)
at November 22nd, 2009 (11:41 pm)

so i watched WoM again and while overall i liked it, there's something about it that irks me which is... (spoilers for WoM and also TW:Children of Earth) )

i also find it interesting the way that this whole thing is playing out, this sense of inevitability because we all know that this is david's final run, and how differently would the story be or the momentum be if the fact that he was going to regenerate at the end of the christmas special was still an unknown to the public. That strikes a question that i don't know the answer to regarding the old series: i remember watching planet of the spiders, logopolis, and the caves of androzoni when those episodes premiered on public telly in the US, and i remember not having a clue that the doctor was regenerating in those episodes until the very end. So did the british public know ahead of time that those actors were retiring prior to the season ending? was there a big hubbub about tom baker in particular leaving the series after his long tenure and his popularity?

More Sonic Screwdriver fun
by corsairgrainne ([info]corsairgrainne)
at November 22nd, 2009 (10:32 pm)

So I've made it a habit to start taking my sonic screwdriver with me to SCA events. This last weekend's was no exception! It confused most people in my camp as they hadn't seen it at the last event. I got the official seal of nerd from everyone there. I took it over to my friend's camp and his daughter saw it. She thought it was the coolest thing ever. Of course, the conversation ensued as so:

B: What's that?
G: A screw driver.
B: What kind of screw driver?
G: A sonic screw driver.
B: *turns it on* AWESOME! What does it do?
G: Everything.
B: *points it at her father*
G: BAHAHAHAHA!!!

Apparently now she's been converted to Doctor Who. I also converted another friend over to Torchwood because of Captain Jack.

To end the fun, I used the screw driver to shine a line into the porta potty to ensure there wasn't anything gross or creepy crawly in it... I had conflicting feelings right after I did it because it was extremely nerdy but kinda cool in an odd way all at the same time...

Ever wonder if you could just drop a waterproof LED light into an actual screwdriver (alcoholic beverage kind) and call it a sonic screw driver? I suppose that's a whole other conversation.

dorky

current mood: dorky

Hi guys!

I should be cooking the 3 1/2 pounds of ground beef I have sitting in the fridge, or doing laundry, or any one of a bunch of other things I know I'm neglecting. But what's on my mind instead? JB, of course! How surprising, only not.

I'm watching the concert dvd, and the special features, and trying to get an idea of what clips that ended up in the special features fit where. Would anyone who was at Glasgow be willing to give me a hand?

I think it's:

Don't Stop Me Now
Just Help Yourself
What About Us?
I Made it Through the Rain
Life is a Roller Coaster
Rhinestone Cowboy
When You Tell Me That You Love Me
One Night Only
I'm So Excited
Boogie Wonderland
Rhythm of the Night
Both Sides Now
Goodbye, My Friend
Knock Three Times
Amazing Grace
Everything
Danny Boys
I Know Him So Well
Trouser rip
I Won't Send Roses
Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Livin' La Vida Loca,
From a Distance
I Am What I Am

The only one I can't figure out for the life of me is the Scottish/ALW medley. Where the heck does that fit?

Yes, I'm anal. :)

Thanks!

New Secret Diary Promo from Showtime
by nibor tnua ([info]skyisfalling)
at November 22nd, 2009 (10:13 pm)

I was shocked with this came on my TV after watching Dexter tonight. It's a new promo/advert for Secret Diary and the other shows premiering Monday, January 25th!:

I need to warn you - it’s very ROUGH and sloppy looking. Took it with my digital camera so it’s shaky and the sound isn't too great. (I’ll have a better version by this coming weekend, I hope. I'll be going home and my parents have a TiVo - much easier to download videos from)

Enjoy!

The Maltese Falcon
by She of the Unpronounceable Name ([info]aibhinn)
at November 22nd, 2009 (08:09 pm)

I did go and get it. I wasn't sure I wanted to, but then I discovered that Rear Window was also in, and I couldn't resist. I got those two and one disk of Poirot, just for the fun of it. I do love David Suchet. :)

The Maltese Falcon was very good, as you might expect of a film that made the AFI Top 100 Films of All Time twice (if I recall correctly). One of those you never quite know the ending to, until it gets there. Some of the dialogue and acting seems a bit odd to modern eyes, but once you get used to it, it's really quite good. And of course, Humphrey Bogart is the quintessential film noir anti-hero. In fact, I do believe The Maltese Falcon is considered the first film noir movie of all time.

So now I'm just finishing up some laundry so I have something clean to wear tomorrow--I figure they'll appreciate that at work. ;) Only three days of work this week, yay! And I don't have to cook Thursday at all; Mom will do the pies, and my sister does the dinner. I just show up. *g* My turn comes on Christmas--but even that's at Mom's house.
